The newly inaugurated Meerut Metro train is operating along the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, giving commuters the first experience of fast and modern transit.

Meerut Metro starts services with the Delhi–Meerut RRTS corridor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 82-km-long Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) on February 22, 2026. He flagged off the 5 km stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, the 21 km stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram, and the metro section from Shatabdi Nagar station in Meerut South to Modipuram.

Prime Minister Modi, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and officials from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), boarded the metro from Shatabdi Nagar to Meerut South. He interacted with passengers, and officials briefed him on the operations and project details of the Namo Bharat Train.

Yogi Adityanath welcomed the Prime Minister at Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad. He then proceeded to Meerut, where he inaugurated sections of the RRTS railway track and the Meerut Metro, followed by addressing a public rally. Before the rally, he inaugurated and dedicated development projects worth approximately ₹12,930 crore.

RRTS Speed in Meerut Metro

Designed for a maximum speed of 180 kmph and an operating speed of up to 160 kmph, the RRTS will significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and major urban centers such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut.

The Meerut Metro, which runs parallel to the RRTS at many points, is India's fastest metro with a maximum operating speed of approximately 120 kmph. It will cover the entire route in approximately 30 minutes. This marks the first time in India that both the Namo Bharat Train and the Metro will run on the same track built for the RRTS.

Meerut Metro Stations

The 23-kilometer-long Meerut Metro corridor has a total of 13 stations covering major residential and commercial areas of the city. These stations are:

  • Meerut South
  • Partapur
  • Rithani
  • Shatabdi Nagar
  • Brahmpuri
  • Meerut Central
  • Bhaisali
  • Begumpul
  • MES Colony
  • Daurali
  • Meerut North
  • Modipuram
  • Modipuram Depot

Interchange Stations

Passengers can interchange between Meerut Metro and RRTS services at four major stations:

  • Meerut South
  • Shatabdi Nagar
  • Begumpul
  • Modipuram

Major Stations, Features and Connectivity

Sarai Kale Khan, the corridor's starting station, is one of four Namo Bharat stations inaugurated. Developed as a major multi-modal hub, it connects Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Delhi Metro Pink Line, Veer Hakikat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road. The other three stations—Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—are located in Meerut.

The Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Corridor (RRTS) features smart ticket vending machines and QR code-based ticketing, ensuring quick and convenient cashless travel. Six platforms have been built with future expansion in mind, enabling integration with the proposed Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Karnal Rapid Rail Corridors.

The Namo Bharat Train reflects the design and feel of a bullet train, featuring a fully digital driver's console designed to handle speeds of up to 180 kmph. For enhanced convenience, premium coaches are available, equipped with features such as mobile and laptop charging points, sunshade curtains, and comfortable seating.

There is also a separate coach for women. The train offers ample luggage space and additional standing space for passengers during peak hours. Convenient features such as bottle holders, magazine racks, and footrests further enhance passenger comfort, making the RRTS a modern and passenger-friendly transportation system.
