Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy on 20 May 2026 said that the central government is ready in principle to participate in the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro project on a 50:50 cost sharing basis with the state government. Reddy reviewed Hyderabad's key development projects with Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal in Delhi and said that Manohar Lal has assured him that the central government will positively consider the state government's proposal for the 162-km long second phase. Manohar Lal told Reddy that the central government will take a final decision after receiving the detailed project report (DPR) and other technical details from the state government.
Hyderabad Metro services were increased on Wednesday as the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) Joint Action Committee strike disrupted bus operations across the state, leading to a significant increase in passenger traffic on the city's metro network. With RTC buses not operating, thousands of daily commuters resorted to the metro as their primary mode of travel, resulting in heavy crowding at many stations during the morning and evening peak hours. This congestion was particularly evident at major interchange stations and terminal points, where passenger traffic increased significantly.
As the state government races against time to take over the first phase of the 69.2-km Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) by the end of this month, its special purpose vehicle, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), has begun planning a new system to improve last-mile connectivity. The proposal is to build an advanced, battery-powered pod transport system.
Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday said the decision to release funds for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project will be taken only after the Telangana government completes discussions and takes a final decision on the merger proposal with L&T through a committee formed for the purpose. He told reporters in New Delhi that the state government will first have to clarify its stand on the first phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, complete all formalities related to its acquisition and submit a proper detailed project report (DPR) before the process of financial assistance can begin.
