About Chowringhee
Chowringhee's history dates back to the 18th century when it was just a dirt road connecting Fort William to the village of Kalighat. It was widened and developed into a promenade during the British colonial era. Originally named after a village called Chourangi, it was later anglicized to Chowringhee. In the British Raj, it became the center of social and cultural life in Kolkata and was often referred to as the "Champs-Élysées of the East."
