About National Rail Museum

National Rail Museum is a perfect place to discover the history of Indian railways. It is located at Chanakyapuri and came into existence on 1st February 1977 and spreads over an area of 10 acres. The collection present in the museum exhibits nearly 163 years of history of Indian Railways. More then 5 lakh people visit this place every year.

The museum comprises of nearly 80 life-size outdoor displays that include locomotives, carriages, and few of the special coaches of different gauges. All the displays are unique in itself and have a lot of historical importance and every piece has an exceptional story associated with it.

Architecture of National Rail Museum

The museum spans an area of over 11 acres and the indoor gallery comprises an octagonal building that houses six display galleries and a large open area is laid out to simulate the atmosphere of a railway yard.The museum has a state of the art air-conditioned conference hall with a seating capacity of 20-25 persons.

  1. National Rail Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. So plan accordingly.
  2. Entry fee on weekdays is Rs.50 per adult and Rs.10 per child. However, during weekends, it goes up to Rs 100 per adult and Rs 20 per child. Tickets for toy trains, 3D simulators and other rides will have to be taken separately.
  3. Prepare yourself for a unique encounter with history when you visit the National Rail Museum. Some rare exhibits showcasing the heritage of British and Indian royalty can be seen inside the museum.
  4. A lot of railway exhibits and infrastructure have been displayed which have developed over the years to give a true picture of Indian Railways.
