About Royal Gaitor Tumbas

Royal Gaitor Tumbas, also called Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan, is the official royal cremation ground of the Kachwaha rulers of Jaipur, established when the city was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 AD. Located in the foothills below Nahargarh Fort, this peaceful complex holds the memorials of Jaipur’s kings and princes. Unlike the busy forts and palaces of Jaipur, Gaitor offers a quiet and serene space. Its beautifully carved memorials are important reminders of Rajput funeral traditions and artistic skill. Built mostly with white marble and sandstone, the cenotaphs honor the bravery and legacy of Jaipur’s royal rulers, making the site both a historical landmark and a cultural attraction for visitors who want to explore Rajasthan’s heritage.

Architecture of Royal Gaitor Tumbas

Commissioned by successive Maharajas of the Kachwaha dynasty from the early 18th century through the early 20th century, the complex evolved over time while adhering to traditional Rajput funerary design.

  • Courtyards: Grouped into multiple open courtyards delineating early and later memorials.
  • Notable cenotaphs: Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II’s memorial with 20 carved pillars; others for Maharajas Pratap Singh, Madho Singh II, and Man Singh II.
