The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) has put forth plans for the development of the Varanasi Metrolite, an urban Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This system is set to encompass two lines and a total of 26 stations within Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance urban transportation options in the city.

In 2015, RITES formulated the initial Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, outlining a robust heavy-rail system. The blueprint emphasized an underground construction for around 80% of Phase 1's routes. Subsequently, the Uttar Pradesh state cabinet endorsed this DPR on April 18, 2016, followed by its approval by the Central Government's cabinet on May 23, 2016.

In 2017, the project was halted because its expense and ridership forecasts did not align with the new Metro Rail Policy of the Government of India, making it financially unsustainable.

Varanasi Metrolite is an urban light rail transit (LRT) system consisting of 2 lines and 26 stations proposed to be constructed by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

The first detailed project report (DPR) of the project envisioning a heavy rail based system was prepared by RITES in 2015. It was envisaged to make about 80% of the lines of Phase 1 underground. This DPR was approved by the State Cabinet of Uttar Pradesh on 18 April, 2016 and by the Central Government Cabinet on 23 May, 2016.

The project was stopped in 2017 due to its high cost and low ridership projections which were not in line with the new metro rail policy of the Government of India.

Since then, the project has been renovated/rebranded as Light Metro Rail or MetroLite project. In December 2019, RITES finalized its route connecting BHEL and BHU and submitted its report to the Uttar Pradesh government.

The proposed system will have two lines: one from BHEL to Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the other from Benia Bagh to Sarnath. It will have 26 stations including 20 underground stations and six elevated stations, spanning a total of 29.23 km.

As of now, the project is in various stages of planning and development. Its completion date has not been decided yet.

The detailed project report (DPR) was approved in May 2016, but was revised due to changes in metro rail policies.

The estimated cost of the Varanasi Metro project is ₹17,227 crore, which will be jointly funded by the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
